All Kurotatsumon have the ability to use the shadows to move around, and it is referred to as "''Shimmering''". It is not a ''true'' teleport, but instead a ''Shadow Step'' and requires natural darkness and shadows to move effectively through. This ability is granted them by being a Demon Dragon-type Digimon. They are able to use this ability while in '''Shadowform''', but doing so sacrifices all Defense for Speed in order to escape due to the required concentration to manage both moves at once. 
 
 
Their primary home territory was [[Digital_World#Nightwhisper_Caverns|Nightwhisper Caverns]], but as it stands now, there are no remnants of them left. A Crypt ''had'' been discovered by '''Nyarlathmon''', but has since been re-sealed with his explanation of it being "far too dangerous to go into".

The Kurotatsumon species was visibly, and entirely, wiped out by the Royal Knights, leaving only one remaining Kurotatsumon; which is Shugotenshi's partner, Auren. As a race, the Royal Knights had perpetuated rumors and fear to the point of hysteria. Digimon of all types turned against the Demon Dragons for fear of their own races being destroyed by them or the Royal Knights for helping them. As the Kurotatsumon began to disappear, however, their numbers began to dwindle far faster than expected. Entire villages were destroyed in one fell swoop, and terms like 'Scourge' and 'Plague' and the ironic 'Demons' were tossed around as commonly as their species name until they almost took their place entirely. 
 
 
Being the last remaining Kurotatsumon was due to the fact he had been a leader of a hidden village. He had hoped to protect the remnants of his people, but was tricked into leaving them without a guardian, leaving the Royal Knights able to destroy the last of them. Embedded in Auren's Data Core is an "'''Immortality Code'''". This code prevents his ability to reproduce, which prevents his species from repopulating. An upside, is that he cannot be ''Deleted'', however, this does not save him from returning to a Digitama if the damage level is sufficient, and in fact will cause him a great amount of pain to do so; but he is protected from being scanned or destroyed in that form by this code, and his Digitama cannot return to Primary Village. An Immortality Code is both a blessing and a curse. 
 
 
Though all of this was once thought to just be a cruel and pointless whim of the Royal Knights, indications of something more have begun to surface in both worlds.
