Digitama (デジタマ) are how all Digimon begin their life. (Alt: "DigiEgg" [N 1])

All Digimon are born from Digitama. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors, but generally are never much bigger than a basketball. They typically hatch into Baby/Fresh Digimon, but will sometimes hatch directly into a higher form, even an Adult Digimon like Numemon. It is possible for a single Digitama to produce twins. They can be produced in one of a few ways:

  • After the death of a Digimon, if it is not Scanned, its data will reincarnate into a Digitama and return to Primary Village. In this case, the Digitama usually hatches in the deceased Digimon's lowest form.
  • Random data 'roaming' the Digital World may coalesce into a Digitama.[N 2]
  • When two Digimon have relations under the right conditions, their combined code can produce offspring; resulting in Digitama.

It is important to note, that despite some Digimon and Humans referring to them as 'Digieggs', Digimentals are not the same thing as Digitama, even if some of the crystals might have the appearance of one.

Notes
  1. ^ "Digitama" is a portmanteau of the words "Digital" and "tamago" (卵 "egg") in Japanese. Hence, a literal translation is "Digital Egg", which becomes "DigiEgg".
  2. ^ This is also how a new species can be formed.
